Those Sweet Times
Chapter 83 Part 2

Xiang Nuan and Lin Chuyan climbed over the little hill, less than 100 meters high, that was inside Yuanchi Park. When they came down from the hill, they saw Shen Zhemu at the lakefront.

The rain had stopped. Shen Zhemu was standing next to a cherry tree, looking at the lake. His umbrella was placed next to his feet.

He stood there tall and erect, his usual frosty and stern temperament softened by the pink cherry blossoms next to him. As Xiang Nuan looked at him, she couldn’t help but think of one verse in a poem: “alone among fallen petals I stand.”

A girl passing by probably thought of the same thing as Xiang Nuan and mustered enough courage to go up and say the same verse to Shen Zemu.

Shen Zemu’s face went dark. Why did the whole world laugh at him for being single today?

His facial expression frightened the girl away.

Xiang Nuan went over: “Xuezhang, what are you looking at?”  She followed Shen Zemu’s eyes to look at the lake and saw two mandarin ducks floating in the lake.

“So pretty, little mandarin ducks.”[1]

Shen Zemu took his eyes off the lake and turned to look at Xiang Nuan baffled: “They’re just ducks.”

Xiang Nuan: =  =

It was a bit awkward.

Lin Chuyan hugged Xiang Nuan’s shoulder and racked his brain trying to help Xiang Nuan alleviate her embarrassment: “We’re a pair of little mandarin ducks.”

Shen Zemu felt disgusted, he was so disgusted that he wished he could jump into the lake and swim to the other side so he could stop looking at the mandarin duck couple.

Chen Yinghu and Yang Yin walked over from a distance, chatting along the way. When they came closer, Shen Zemu noticed that Chen Yinghu was back to his normal self.

Without knowing why, Shen Zemu felt relieved.

Chen Yinghu braced himself to say to Shen Zemu: “Sorry, cousin, I know you’re doing it for my own good.”

Shen Zemu was somewhat surprised, raised his eyebrows, and turned instead to look at Yang Yin.

Yang Yin had gone to take more pictures with Xiang Nuan.

Chen Yinghu told Shen Zemu: “I only borrowed money from Chuyan, the rest is all from my own pocket. I’ll pay back Chuyan’s money.”

“I see.”

In the end, Chen Yinghu wasn’t prepared to make a police report. Shen Zemu couldn’t understand earlier, but he had pondered on it since then and somewhat understood where Chen Yinghu was coming from. What Yang Yin said to him made sense. Everyone has the right to be weak. Chen Yinghu was now in a rather safe mental state though it was in a precarious state; he was afraid to move forward and to step back. He couldn’t bear the result of either going forward or moving back; the only thing he could do now was to stay at the same spot and wait passively.

If evading the problem would make him feel better, then so be it.

All the strong hearts were hammered out from repeated misery. At that moment, Shen Zemu even felt a little envious of his silly cousin.

“When is the competition?” He asked Chen Yinghu.

He had changed the topic to the Leiting Cup.

Chen Yinghu answered: “The official competition will be during the long weekend on May First.”

“Three days?”

“En, all three days. Two matches the first day, then one each of the following days.”

“16 teams?”

“Right.”

Due to the registration requirements, all 16 teams were led by streamers. The Leiting Cup was open to streamers from all platforms. But since the other platforms were basically competitors to Pea TV, there weren’t many streamers from other platforms participating. The number of teams from other platforms was basically equal to the teams from Pea TV alone.

Not many teams were formed completely by streamers. Most of the teams had one or two streamers, the rest were friends. But in any case, all teams seemed to have relatively high skill levels.

Shem Zemu was always serious about anything he undertook. Once he agreed to do it, he would do it the best he could do it. Since they had registered for the competition, his goal was to get the championship, there wasn’t any thought of just “playing for fun.”

[1]: yuan yang (鸳鸯) or mandarin ducks usually mate for life. In Chinese culture, they are the symbol of loving couples and loyalty in marriage or relationships.

  1. I'm sorry to say SZ is totally not the romantic type. Most girls would find him pretty boring. He could have just echoed XN's comment about the ducks but he just had to say "They are just ducks.." like she doesn't know that.

    1. I kinda like that he's pragmatic and indifferent. But that makes him not suitable for Xiang Nuan.
