You’re My Belated Happiness
Chapter 20 Part 2

Ruan Yu put down the washed fruits and told the Xu family that she would be going.

Though Tao Rong and Xu Huaishi all asked her to stay a little longer, Ruan Yu left anyway since it was rather awkward for both sides to have an outsider in their family reunion.

After Ruan Yu left, Xu Huaishi immediately became nosy: “Ge, did you come back so suddenly because of Ruan Xuejie?”

“What nonsense are you talking about?” Xu Huaisong gave her a look then turned to take a look at Tao Rong who was totally unaware of the situation.

Xu Huaishi made a face at her brother and turned to hug Tao Rong’s arm: “Mom, let me tell you, Ge is chasing after that jiejie.”

Xu Huaisong coughed with a frown.

Tao Rong was surprised and a mist quickly covered her eyes: “Huaisong…… you’re planning on coming back?”

Xu Huaisong cast down his eyes: “I don’t know yet.”

“Oh……” Tao Rong smiled but abruptly stood up: “I’ll go to the bathroom.”

Xu Huaishi released her hold on Tao Rong’s arm. After Tao Rong was out of the room, she whispered: “Ge, did I say something wrong?”

Xu Huaisong gave her a stern look: “Good, you’ve noticed.”

“But what I said is true. If you aren’t planning to come back, why bother chasing Ruan Xuejie? You want to trick her into going to the US with you? Mom really wants you to come back, why not give her something to look forward to!”

“Why should I give her hope when it might not come true?”

Xu Huaishi fully understood now: “Oh, you mean you’ll come back only if you’re successful in pursuing Ruan Xuejie? Then, you’ll see, mom will want her to be her daughter-in-law for sure.”

Ruan Yu didn’t know that she had become a daughter-in-law candidate to the Xu family. She was actually glad that Xu Huaisong’s mother and sister had come just in time to save her from being tortured. She secretly swore to herself, she would not show up in front of Xu Huaisong again before the court date.

Three days later, Liu Mao had good news for her. The defendant seemed to have totally given up; she didn’t even file an answer to the court. The court had decided the court date for the case, it would be a week from now.

Ruan Yu felt more relaxed now that it seemed that the case would be resolved pretty soon. She decided to visit her parents in the suburbs.

Both of her parents were retired teachers. They had taught in various remote areas in their younger days. They had suffered a lot of difficulties but devoted many years teaching in those places before returning to Su City to teach at the First High School. Ruan Yu was born after they had settled down at Su City. After Ruan Yu graduated from high school, they applied for early retirement so they could enjoy a more relaxed life as they were getting old. They moved to Hang City with Ruan Yu.

Hang City was a city where people could live comfortably, especially in the suburbs. Ruan Yu was planning to move in with them after graduating from college as it would be a perfect place to focus on writing. But her dad made her move out, saying that she was too young to live like that or was she going to be a buddhist nun?

Ruan Yu then rented an apartment in the city to live by herself.

When Ruan Yu went back to her parents’ place, her mom was busy in the kitchen and her dad was wearing his reading glasses, carefully pruning the flowers and plants in the yard. He called her over: “Yuyu, how are you getting along with Xiao Liu lately?” He handed over a pair of pruning scissors to her.

Ruan Yu put down her purse and took the scissor to help while saying: “He’s a nice guy.”

The eyes of her father, Ruan Chengru, brightened up, then he heard her continue: “He would be a nice friend.”

Ruan Chengru’s eyes turned dark. Then he hinted: “Law is a good profession. If someday you run into some trouble, he can take care of it for you.”

Ruan Yu had never told her parents her pen name because she didn’t want them to worry over any trouble she might encounter in the web novel circle. One of her parents had problems with the legs and the other had heart problems.

Yet her father’s words made her feel like her father seemed to know everything.

She pretended to not notice anything and tried to gloss it over: “You’re looking forward to having your daughter running into trouble?”

Ruan Chengru changed the subject as he continued pruning: “Your mom and I are thinking about going back to Su City for a visit in the next few days.”

“It’s going to be the rainy season soon. It’s not good for your arthritis. Why bother traveling back and forth?”

“The old house is going to be torn down next month. Your mom is looking at the old pictures every day so I suggested that we go back for a visit since it’s not that far away.”

“Then I’ll go back with mom. You can stay home.”

Ruan Chengru didn’t agree or disagree with his daughter’s suggestion, but asked her to take good care of all the flowers and plants in the yard. Then he turned to go back into the house while massaging his back. He went to the kitchen and told Ruan Yu’s mom in a small voice: “Yuyu said that she’ll accompany you to go back to Su City. Do you think we should contact Xiao Liu so he could take the opportunity to get closer to her?”
