You’re My Belated Happiness
Chapter 18 Part 3
Water drops periodically fell on the awning outside the window which had quite a soporific effect.
Ruan Yu couldn’t recall when she started to have a hard time keeping her eyes open. The next thing she knew was that she was awakened by birds chirping outside early in the morning the next day. When she saw the time on her cell phone showing “05:52:00”, she couldn’t help but cry out in surprise.
Then she heard some rustling sounds coming from the other end of the phone. It sounded like a blanket rubbing against clothing. The slightly hoarse and a little annoyed voice of Xu Huaisong followed: “What are you doing?”
“......”
Ruan Yu was dumbfounded; it felt like he had woken up right next to her.
She hurriedly picked up the cell phone and explained: “It seems that I had accidentally fallen asleep last night……” Then she became curious after explaining: “Why didn’t you turn off the voice chat?”
Xu Huaisong sighed: “Then, I probably fell asleep at about the same time.”
“......”
How could they be so mindless while discussing a case? Wasn’t he the elite of this city?
Ruan Yu responded with an “oh” while feeling rather uneasy at the strange atmosphere between them. Just as she was getting ready to hang up, she heard a sudden piercing sound “du di-- --du di-- --” from Xu Huaisong’s side.
She was stunned: “What’s that sound?”
“Ambulance.”
“Why is an ambulance there?”
Xu Huaisong seemed to have turned around: “I’m at a hospital.”
It was close to noon time when Xu Huaisong was done with his infusion. The time Liu Mao and Chen Hui came over to the hospital, the nurse had just removed the needle from his arm.
Chen Hui handed over the porridge to Xu Huaisong and helped him move the laptop on the bed away. He happened to glance over the screen of the laptop and paused for a moment: “Hrm, listening to ambulance sirens? Song Ge, why are you looking at this?”
Xu Huaisong opened the porridge container and said flatly: “Nothing, just suddenly wanted to listen to songs.”
Liu Mao took a glance at his pale face and shook his head: “Looking for ambulance music to get some excitement? Don’t look for excitement if you can’t afford it. You said you had this stomach problem back in the US?”
Xu Huaisong didn’t think much of it: “It’s just an occupational hazard.”
Liu Mao smeared: “I’m a lawyer too, why don’t I have it? Xiao Chen, you don’t have it either, right?” He added: “You know your stomach couldn’t take it and you still ate a dozen or so rice cakes and drank a row of vodka. If I were a girl, I definitely wouldn’t care for a man who doesn’t know how to properly take care of his own health.”
Chen Hui didn’t know Liu Mao was implying something else. He widened his eyes: “Mao Ge, so you have that kind of inclination?”
“Get lost!” Liu Mao gave him a glance and sent him aside. Then he asked Xu Huaisong: “So the police came by yesterday?”
Xu Huaisong swallowed some porridge and nodded: “I’m a person with a police record now.”
“I will never let you go get drunk by yourself from now on.” Liu Mao laughed so hard that his stomach hurt. “So you really knocked on a dozen or so 302 doors in the middle of the night?”
Xu Huaisong had knocked on a dozen or so 302 doors but perfectly avoided the correct building.
His drunkenness was way too dramatic.
Liu Mao calmed down somewhat and said: “Such a pity.”
A nurse happened to knock on the door and said: “Mr. Xu, there's Ms. Ruan who’s coming to see you.”
A surprise look flashed in Liu Mao’s eyes.
Xu Huaisong nodded at the nurse. After the nurse turned to leave, he answered Liu Mao: “It’s not a pity at all.”
Liu Mao suddenly understood what he meant.
What kind of lawyer was Xu Huaisong at court? He would always make a stand at every step he took and calculate the consequence of every statement. He believed that if he couldn’t hit the nail on the head, it would be a crushing defeat to him.
He could accept defeat but not a single mishap was allowed. Therefore he refused to go forward prematurely when he deemed the timing wasn’t right.
For him, pursuing love was just like in the courtroom. All the patient, delicate buildup and exaggeration were all for the final definite result.
It wasn’t the time for that moment yet, therefore he was grateful that he didn’t knock on that particular door.
Xu Huaisong put the lid back on the porridge and handed it over to Liu Mao, asking him to throw it into the trash.
In the hallway, Ruan Yu carried a thermal box with one hand and some documents on her other hand. She was walking slowly towards Xu Huaisong’s room.
