You’re My Belated Happiness
Chapter 14 Part 3

Ruan Yu clicked the screen lock and put the cell phone in her pocket. She took a look at the laundered clothes waiting to be hung dry. She carried the basket full of clothes to the balcony. The moment she picked up the fork pole, the cell phone in her pocket vibrated twice.

Vibrating twice didn’t seem like Xu Huaisong’s style? She took out her phone and sure enough they weren’t from him.
10086: [Disconnect reminder: Dear subscriber, how are you……]
10086: [Overdue reminder: Dear subscriber, how are you……]

Her phone was disconnected because her phone charge was overdue. She noticed that the wifi was still working and she could still receive WeChat messages. She ignored the overdue reminder for now and continued to hang her clothes to dry. After she finished, she heard her cell phone vibrate again.
This time it was from Xu Huaisong: [No time to type.]

What was the difference between “no time to type” and “no time”?
The very next second, Ruan Yu received a request for a voice call.
“......”

Ruan Yu accepted the call. Before she could greet him, it sounded rather hectic on the other end. There were men and women talking, in English, as if they were in a heated debate about something.
She quickly said: “Mr. Xu, the thing I want to talk about isn’t that important. If you’re busy……”

The next moment, it all quieted down on the other side.
All the noise disappeared completely.
Ruan Yu looked at the screen in confusion, bad connection?

On the other side of the phone, seven or eight people in the conference room with baffled expressions and some with their mouths half open were looking at Xu Huaisong who was making a “stop” gesture.

Xu Huaisong didn’t make a sound but stood up to write on the white board behind him: urgent call.
Everyone closed their mouths.

“Go ahead.” Ruan Yu heard his relaxed voice.

Oh, so it was still connected.
With her hand holding onto the window sill, Ruan Yu weighed her words: “The thing is, Mr. Xu, the defendant had run into me in a shopping center once. I’m not sure whether it was a coincidence or on purpose. If it was on purpose, I’m worried that the extent of leaking of my personal information is far worse than I’ve imagined. Besides, after recording our conversation the other day, she even sent me a somewhat threatening message……”

Since she had imagined all sorts of frightening things that could happen, she had difficulty expressing herself and seemed to have missed the point of what she was trying to convey.
Yet Xu Huaisong understood quite well: “You’re worried that the defendant will be a threat to your personal safety?”
“En……”

Ruan Yu laughed wryly. The tone of his voice seemed rather indifferent. Ruan Yu thought the next thing he would do was question her-- --Do you have delusions or suffer from a persecution complex?
Without waiting for him to continue, Ruan Yu immediately said: “Of course, it should be that I’m thinking……”

She suddenly paused before she could say “too much.” Her eyes were fixed on a white van parked in front of her apartment building.

Most of the van was blocked by two big trees with lush foliage. She couldn’t see the windshield and the license plate. But she could faintly see the body of the van was covered with mud and the side window was tinted black.
The van looked very much like the car kidnappers used in TV dramas……

Ruan Yu stopped talking. Xu Huaisong asked: “What’s wrong?”
Ruan Yu was so frightened that she didn’t notice that the tone of Xu Huaisong’s voice sounded a little anxious.

Ruan Yu squatted down to hide and stammered to say: “There…… there’s a van parked downstairs. It wasn’t there when I started washing my clothes a while ago……”
“What kind of car?”
Ruan Yu’s brain went blank: “It…… it’s the kind suitable for kidnapping people!”

“Stay calm.” Xu Huaisong certainly was much more calm than her. As he was about to ask her to describe it more in detail, he heard the doorbell on the phone.

At the same time, Ruan Yu gasped and sounded like she was about to cry: “My doorbell rang, what should I do……”
