Starlight Has No Past
Chapter 40 Part 3

Zhou Tingsheng took out a laminated leaf from his wallet and lifted it up in front of his eyes to block the view of Ye Qiao’s pale face on the tv. The leaf was well preserved, it was still green with clear grains as if it had never left the branch on the tree or ever experienced a chilly autumn and a freezing winter.
The leaves of white birch trees were some of the most beautiful leaves. White birch trees were the first to grow new leaves after a forest fire.
Zhou Tingsheng mumbled: “My Qiaoqiao is alive and well.”

When Qianxi came back to the inpatient ward, she happened to see Liang Zirao leaving. The well dressed woman look quite familiar to her. The moment she saw Zhou Tingsheng in the lobby, she immediately realized who that lady was. Brother and sister looked very much alike, yet the sister looked like the iron lady on a fashion magazine while the brother looked like a down and out young man in a Hong Kong drama.

Qianxi went over to greet Zhou Tingsheng and shared one of the hot drinks she was carrying when she noticed his worn out face. “Here. The lobby is quite cold at night. I’ve arranged for my dad to stay in an empty room very close to my cousin’s room. It’s easy to get news more quickly there. Do you want to come along?”
Zhou Tingsheng didn’t take the drink but agreed to go to the hospital room with her.

On the way there, Qianxi kept looking at her cell phone and said in a small voice: “The video showing how cousin got hurt is now all over the internet. If she hadn’t been with the little girl, my cousin’s route and position at the time wouldn’t be in the fireball’s way. She could’ve gotten away unscathed. The little girl’s parents already sent a statement of their appreciation for it. There are many people sending well wishes to cousin and hope that she’s fine. It’s been even more popular than any press conference for new movies.”

They arrived at the room while she was talking, Ye Zhiliang had just had a nap and opened his eyes to see Qianxi and Zhou Tingsheng entering into the room. He cordially said to Zhou Tingsheng: “You’re here too.”
Qianxi handed over the drinks and food to her dad and said: “He’s been here all along. He even helped with the blood transfusion.”
Ye Zhiliang then noticed the bandage on Zhou Tingsheng’s arm and gave an appreciative smile. Zhou Tingsheng sat down quietly. Qianxi received a message and made an excuse to go out of the room, leaving the two men in the room to wait for news about Ye Qiao. Ye Zhiliang opened the window and lit up a cigarette. When Zhou Tingsheng smelled the cigarette, he was a little surprised.

The middle aged man suddenly sighed with tight knitted eyebrows and spoke with a smoky voice: “It seems the daughters of our Ye family don’t have a long life.”
Zhou Tingsheng understood what he meant. Even if Ye Qiao came out of this accident safely, she still faced many health issues.

Ye Zhiliang turned his head to look at Zhou Tingsheng: “When Qiaoqiao’s mom passed away, she was only a little bit over 30. Before she died, she made me promise to take good care of Qiaoqiao. I’ve been taking care of her like my own daughter ever since. It’s been over ten years now. Qiaoqiao’s heart transplant has been very successful. Not a single major problem in the last decade. However, deep in my heart, I’m scared every year……”

Qianxi, though naughty, was comparatively easier to raise since all her emotions were written on her face. On the contrary, Ye Qiao wouldn’t say anything to her family. After her relationship with her father, Xu Zang, went sour, she lived like an orphan. Yet the reason for her breaking off with her father was still a mystery to the Ye family. Ye Zhiliang spent a lot of time and energy on his niece and sometimes he felt like he was more like her father.

Ye Zhiliang flickered off the cigarette ash with his finger and asked Zhou Tingsheng: “There will be more situations like this. Are you ready for them?”
Could Zhou Tingsheng accept the fact that the one who died the next would be the one he loved the most?
Before Zhou Tingsheng could reply, Qianxi rushed into the room to report: “Cousin’s awake, she’s awake!”
