The nurse came in to give Xu Yin the shot and stayed by the bedside to comfort him until he calmed down. The nurse turned to leave and saw Ruan Yu’s hand. She called out in shock: “Miss, your hand……”

Just that moment, Xu Huaisong and Tao Rong had rushed over to the ward. They probably had seen the panicking hospital staff on their way to the room and hastily ran over.

Tao Rong was stunned by the mess in the room and stood frozen at the door.

Xu Huaisong immediately saw the blood on Ruan Yu’s palm. He hurriedly stepped forward, without even asking about his father, and pulled Ruan Yu out of the room by her uninjured hand: “Nurse, please come take care of her wounds.”

The nurse laughed and also joined in: “Rabbits are rodents. Usually there’s no need to get rabies shots after being bitten by rabbits. Actually, I’m the one who needs to get some digestive tablets after being fed so much PDA.”

Xu Huaisong replies with a laugh: “Then we’ll pay for the medicine.”

Ruan Yu was amused by the exchange. By the time she was reminded of the pain, her palm was already bandaged up.

Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu stayed in the hospital for the next few days.

Xu’s father had been receiving treatment for adapting to a new environment since two months ago. He was well prepared for the transfer and his physical condition was much better than expected. Aside from being less talkative, he didn’t have much resistance to the new caregiver. For the first three days he wasn’t very cooperative, but he gradually got used to the caregiver afterwards.

Occasionally, he didn’t follow instructions and usually Xu Huaisong could calm him down.

Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu took turns staying in the ward to keep an eye on his father. Xu Huaisong still had jet lag and the two of them took turns sleeping.

The day that Tao Rong was scheduled to come to Hang City happened to be the court day of Wei Jin’s case in Su City. Xu Huaisong went to the court hearing and planned to bring his mother back with him after the hearing.

Ruan Yu picked up a glass to pour some hot water for him. Then she sat next to the bed and asked: “Uncle Xu, do you want some apples? I'll peel them for you.”

Xu Yin took a look at her and didn’t seem to understand what she was saying. But because he was in a good mood, he nodded with a laugh anyway.

Ruan Yu picked a few apples from the fruit basket and prepared to go to the coffee room on this floor to wash the apples.

Auntie came up: “Let me do it.”

Ruan Yu waved her hand: “It’s alright. I don’t have anything to do anyway.” She then noticed that the cartoon had finished and it was showing commercials on the TV now. She told Auntie Wu: “Please change the channel for him.”

“Sure.”

Ruan Yu held the plate with apples to leave the room. She washed the apples in the coffee room, then received a WeChat message.

The doctor on duty rushed over in time to help Xu Yin back into the bed and get him under control. The doctor then told the nurse outside at the doorway: “Come give him a sedative shot!”

Ruan Yu breathed a sigh of relief and kept panting at the side.

Ruan Yu was sweating all over and her whole body was warm. She was no longer sneezing. She gave Xu Huaisong a stare and said: “Do your employees know that their boss is this kind of person?”

Xu Huaisong pulled her over to the shower and laughed to say: “Even if they know, I’m still their boss.”

After the shower, Ruan Yu went back to the bed and had a few bites from the lunch box. Then she took a two-hour nap before feeling like herself again.

All the lawyers at the office were relieved that their boss had left early and they all sent the two off with a smile since now they could get off work on time.

At noon, they met Xu Huaisong who was pushing a wheelchair with his father in it at the airport lobby.

Ruan Yu saw them coming from afar and came up with Chen Hui and the caregiver to meet them. She was feeling a little perturbed.

Xu Yin, like Jiang Yi, had been through a lot and looked a lot older than their age. He was sleeping with his head tilted and looked a bit run down.

Ruan Yu followed him downstairs and asked: “Do Auntie and Huaishi know that your father has come back?”

Xu Huaisong nodded.

“Then will they come over today?”

Xu Huaisong smiled: “Actually, everyone in my family is weird. My mom and I like to bottle things up. My dad and sister are stubborn. It’s been too many years, they probably need some more time to get over it.”

Ruan Yu held his hand: “It’s alright. Your room has all been arranged so you’ll be near your father. I’ll stay with you in the hospital these days.”

Xu Huaisong: “En.” His cell phone suddenly started to ring.

It was a number from the US which he didn’t recognize.

He picked up the call with one hand while the other continued to hold Ruan Yu’s hand as they walked outside.

Ruan Yu heard him saying a few sentences in English, then his eyebrows gathered. After a long silence, he said: “Please send me the letter, thank you.”

Ruan Yu understood the last sentence.

After Xu Huaisong hung up the phone, Ruan Yu asked: “What letter? Is there some work coming up?”

Xu Huaisong shook his head and said after a short pause: “This person said that my father had put three letters in his care five years ago and asked him to send them to me only after his death. But now that he has left the US, he’s wondering whether he should send them out or not.”

“Achoo!” Ruan Yu sneezed and innocently replied: “You’ll have to ask the evil wind of Hang City why it blew my umbrella away……”

Xu Huaisong took Ruan Yu’s bag and put his arm around her to go upstairs. He brought her into the rest area of his own office.

All the partners of the law firm had their own independent office with a small rest area attached with a bed and bathroom.

Xu Huaisong closed the door to the rest area and turned up the heater before going into the bathroom to fetch a bath towel. He dried her hair first and said with tightly knit eyebrows: “Why did you come over here all by yourself in this kind of weather? Do you still remember that I’m your boyfriend?”

The next day, Xu Huaisong brought Ruan Yu with him to meet with Cen Rongshen so they could negotiate with Global Filming to add an addendum to the contract. The addendum would, in accordance with Ruan Yu’s wishes, allow her to participate in casting and in the filming and post production of the film after completing the script.

Wei Jin’s initial plan for the project was to start filming before the end of the year, before the hype about the controversies surrounding the original novel disappeared from people’s minds. Everyone involved, including the director and actors, had all made arrangements to be available for the filming.

Now, Cen Rongshen had begun picking up all the pieces, though it was meant to be a form of compensation to Ruan Yu, as a businessman he wouldn’t overlook the profit aspect and certainly wanted to avoid paying the huge sum for breaching the contracts.  Therefore, he asked the production team to make up the lost time and start filming as scheduled.

The whole production team was thus caught in crunch mode.

Ruan Yu was forced from an idle person into a workaholic. She had no time for Xu Huaisong as he prepared for another phase of the lawyer exam.

She stayed in the Global Filming meeting room everyday. She had meetings during the day and worked on the script at night. When it was time to go to sleep, she would fall fast asleep as soon as her head touched the pillow.

Xu Huaisong had become a display piece. When he went to bed after studying and wanted to chat a little with Ruan Yu, all he would hear was the sound of Ruan Yu’s steady and heavy breathing if he paused for a couple seconds.

The next morning, Xu Huaisong didn’t have the heart to point out that she had ignored him the night before and remained silent about it. He would take her to Global Filming before going to the law office.

People in the law office hadn’t seen Ruan Yu for quite a while and began to suspect that there was some problem between the two.

But they soon noticed during lunchtime that Xu Huaisong would pick up his cell phone as soon as it vibrated while he was eating as if he was afraid of missing something. Then, he would put down the cell phone with a dark face only after receiving reminders from China Mobile about his data limits.

In addition, the time he went off work had nothing to do with his work progress or study plans. Everyday, he would pick up his jacket as soon as he received a phone call to leave the office without any delay.

Ruan Yu’s script wasn’t finalized until the weather had cooled down and it was late autumn, one day in early November.

On the day the script was finalized, Ruan Yu only had a half-day meeting. There was a cold front coming to the city that day and the temperature suddenly dropped. It was very cloudy that morning and by noon, it was windy with heavy rain.

The weather was so bad that Ruan Yu went back up after coming down from the meeting room. She planned to wait till the rain lightened up a little before leaving. The producer, Zheng Shan, happened to see her and stopped her to ask whether Ruan Yu wanted to ride with her.

The place Zheng Shan was heading to was in the opposite direction to Ruan Yu’s apartment, but it was on the way to Zhikun Law Firm.

Since Xu Huaisong would be at the office this time of the day, Ruan Yu took the offer to get in the car with Zheng Shan and got off right across from the law office.

The rain was still pouring down. Ruan Yu had great difficulty opening the umbrella up against the wind.

Zheng Shan turned to tell her to be careful on the road.

“You think every woman on the street is your Ruan Jie?” Xu Huaisong didn’t expect Ruan Yu to come to his office and opened the lunch box without even bothering to check.

Chen Hui thought he must have been mistaken. Then, the office phone started ringing. Xu Huaisong answered with the speaker on. Both men heard the front desk lady saying: “Lawyer Xu, Ms. Ruan’s here. You may have to come down now.”

Xu Huaisong took a glance at Chen Hui, whose expression seemed to say “see, I told you so and you didn’t believe me.” Xu Huaisong put down the chopsticks and briskly walked out of the office. He went down to the lobby and saw Ruan Yu completely drenched by the rain.

The front desk had given Ruan Yu some napkins which she was using to wipe the water off her face.

No wonder the front desk asked him to come down.

Therefore, you have to be like your father, working with all your abilities for your clients and continue to fight on.”

Xu Huaisong looked at her: “En. But, will you be scared?” Like his mother at the time.

Ruan Yu shook her head and seriously looked back at him: “I’m not scared of rumors and slander. I'll always be at your side.”

Xu Huaisong smiled. Suddenly, his cell phone started ringing once again.

This time it was a call from Zhang Jie.

Xu Huaisong nodded: “I planned to tell you after talking over the details with Global Filming tomorrow.”

“But.” Ruan Yu frowned: “That’s just too much, I can’t afford to take it……”

Xu Huaisong lightly tapped on her forehead: “He’s going to make money investing in the movie. Besides, he’ll probably make much more than you would.”

Back in Hang City, Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu entered an intensive period of preparing for the lawyer exam. Ruan Yu was treating him like her son; even giving him a “mother believes you can” look. She made sure Xu Huaisong did practice tests every day and cooked brain food for him.

On the day of the exam, Ruan Yu even wore a burgundy colored dress to make it more festive and accompanied him to the location of the exam.

Xu Huaisong, though he appreciated it, also noticed the reason why Ruan Yu had been so dedicated to him lately.

Her movie project had been put on hold. Though she looked like she didn’t mind it too much, she felt it as a loss nonetheless. Therefore, she put all her attention on him so she didn’t have to think about the abandoned scripts.

One time when Xu Huaisong was taking a break from practicing, he noticed that Ruan Yu was working on an outline on paper for a new book. But it didn’t seem to go too well and after several attempts, she threw out the paper.

Xu Huaisong thought what Ruan Yu was feeling now was probably similar to when one was interrupted half way when  stretching themself. When they tried again, they had already lost all the momentum. 

The exam lasted for six hours. When Xu Huaisong walked out of the place, it was already evening. He immediately saw Ruan Yu waiting not too far away. He was about to walk towards her direction, when he was stopped by two young ladies who ran up to him: “Mister!”

They looked much younger than him and seemed to have taken the same exam as him.

Xu Huaisong stopped but didn’t say anything and gave them a questioning look.

One of the young ladies took a deep breath and handed over a pen while looking downwards: “How are you, I sat right next to you during the exam today. You dropped your pen there……”

Xu Huaisong took a look at the pen and didn’t recognize the pen.

“This isn’t my pen.”

“Uh……” The woman looked up, embarrassed, and gave the woman next to her a look for assistance.

Xu Huaisong nodded at them and walked around them.

The other woman was bold enough to catch up with him: “Mister, she……she actually was going to ask you for your WeChat!”

Xu Huaisong stopped and flatly replied: “Sorry, I don’t have it.”

The two women were taken aback by his answer and their faces drooped. Suddenly, they saw a woman wearing a burgundy dress walk over to stand right in front of Xu Huaisong.

Then they saw the man who had heartlessly turned them down three seconds ago lowered his head and said with a smile: “I do. Want to get on it?”

The two women couldn’t believe their eyes watching Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu walking off hand in hand. They looked at each other in the slightly cool early autumn breeze: “So nowadays you need to ask for the car license plate number instead of WeChat to hit on someone?”

There was a news article under trending. It was about the court of Su City reopening Jiang Yi’s case. There was a video clip attached to the post. It showed Jiang Yi wailing in front of the police station and Xu Huaisong going up to comfort him.

Some passerby must have taped it and sent it over to the news reporter.

The comments below had exploded with an outpouring of sympathy.

Daybreak the next morning, Xu Huaisong was awoken by the noise of a ringtone alarm.

Immediately, a hand reached over to rummage the top of his chest.

He frowned and caught her hand with closed eyes: “Your cell phone isn’t here……”

Ruan Yu was in a daze. With half closed eyes, she raised her head: “Where is it?”

She had the habit of putting her cell phone under the cover with her while she was sleeping, probably from living by herself for so long. It gave her a sense of security. She hadn’t changed the habit yet.

Xu Huaisong had smacked her cell phone in the middle of the night and removed her phone to put on the nightstand.

He was silent for a moment before opening his eyes amidst the persistent ringtone. He turned to search for the phone and turned off the alarm. He turned back and pulled Ruan Yu into his arms: “Why set the alarm?”

“I can’t keep sleeping and wait for breakfast to be served at your home.” Ruan Yu held on to Xu Huaisong’s pajamas and painfully said: “You didn’t kill the snooze setting. When it rings again, I’ll……”

Before she could utter the words “get up”, she had already fallen back to sleep.

Xu Huaisong was also fast asleep soon afterwards.

When Ruan Yu woke up again, she could smell the aroma of porridge.

She opened her eyes and was a little confused at first, then she sat up and pushed Xu Huaisong: “What time is it?”

Xu Huaisong didn’t get much rest on the airplane and was still quite sleepy. He half closed his eyes and rested his chin on Ruan Yu’s collar bone, putting half of his body weight on her.

Ruan Yu continued to wash her face. With the burden on her, she bent over and managed to clean her face. Then she put her wet face on his: “Wake up, hurry.”

The cold water on his face made Xu Huaisong open his eyes. He woke up and lifted a dry towel to dry his face, then used the other side of the towel to wipe Ruan Yu’s face. When the towel touched her face, she told him to stop.

“Hmph, wrong direction! If you wipe that way, my skin will slack!”

Xu Huaisong didn’t know what to do: “Then how should I wipe?”

Ruan Yu gestured upwards: “You have to gently push upwards.”

Xu Huaisong did as told and dried Ruan Yu’s face. He sighed: “You’ve also changed.”

Ruan Yu pouted her lips: “How so?”

Tao Rong nodded and didn’t continue with the subject. They chatted a little while longer and Tao Rong said: “You’ve just gotten off such a long flight, go with Ruan Yu and rest early. We have the room ready for you.”

Xu Huaisong agreed and went to the room with Ruan Yu. After closing the door, he lightly pinched her face and asked in a low voice: “What were you trying to do?”

It was obvious that Ruan Yu had intentionally brought up the topic tonight. She came over to his house specifically for that purpose.

Ruan Yu leaned against the door and smiled at him innocently: “What did I do?”

Xu Huaisong was left speechless.

He was estranged from his family and his personality made it harder for him to resolve it. She was trying to find ways for them to break the ice.

Xu Huaisong sighed and let her go: “Go take a shower.”

They took a shower one after the other.

Ruan Yu put on the night gown she had just purchased earlier. It had a low cut and while she was getting onto the bed, she covered her chest with her hands.

They were at his home and had to be more restrained.

Xu Huaisong shook his head and pulled her back: “Sleep.”
