Back in Hang City, Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu entered an intensive period of preparing for the lawyer exam. Ruan Yu was treating him like her son; even giving him a “mother believes you can” look. She made sure Xu Huaisong did practice tests every day and cooked brain food for him.

On the day of the exam, Ruan Yu even wore a burgundy colored dress to make it more festive and accompanied him to the location of the exam.

Xu Huaisong, though he appreciated it, also noticed the reason why Ruan Yu had been so dedicated to him lately.

Her movie project had been put on hold. Though she looked like she didn’t mind it too much, she felt it as a loss nonetheless. Therefore, she put all her attention on him so she didn’t have to think about the abandoned scripts.

One time when Xu Huaisong was taking a break from practicing, he noticed that Ruan Yu was working on an outline on paper for a new book. But it didn’t seem to go too well and after several attempts, she threw out the paper.

Xu Huaisong thought what Ruan Yu was feeling now was probably similar to when one was interrupted half way when  stretching themself. When they tried again, they had already lost all the momentum. 

The exam lasted for six hours. When Xu Huaisong walked out of the place, it was already evening. He immediately saw Ruan Yu waiting not too far away. He was about to walk towards her direction, when he was stopped by two young ladies who ran up to him: “Mister!”

They looked much younger than him and seemed to have taken the same exam as him.

Xu Huaisong stopped but didn’t say anything and gave them a questioning look.

One of the young ladies took a deep breath and handed over a pen while looking downwards: “How are you, I sat right next to you during the exam today. You dropped your pen there……”

Xu Huaisong took a look at the pen and didn’t recognize the pen.

“This isn’t my pen.”

“Uh……” The woman looked up, embarrassed, and gave the woman next to her a look for assistance.

Xu Huaisong nodded at them and walked around them.

The other woman was bold enough to catch up with him: “Mister, she……she actually was going to ask you for your WeChat!”

Xu Huaisong stopped and flatly replied: “Sorry, I don’t have it.”

The two women were taken aback by his answer and their faces drooped. Suddenly, they saw a woman wearing a burgundy dress walk over to stand right in front of Xu Huaisong.

The woman glanced over at them then asked him with a smile: “Mister, you don’t have WeChat, but do you have a car license plate number?”

Then they saw the man who had heartlessly turned them down three seconds ago lowered his head and said with a smile: “I do. Want to get on it?”

The two women couldn’t believe their eyes watching Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu walking off hand in hand. They looked at each other in the slightly cool early autumn breeze: “So nowadays you need to ask for the car license plate number instead of WeChat to hit on someone?”

“En. Let’s remember that. Next time when we meet a man like that, we won’t miss it!”

Ruan Yu irritatedly followed Xu Huaisong into the car: “I wasn’t around you for only a few hours and you’ve already got girls hitting on you!”

“I……” Xu Huaisong felt so helpless at being blamed for something he had no fault over. He was about to say something to cheer her up when his cell phone, which he had just turned on, began to ring from the number of notification messages.

The messages indicated that Xu Huaishi had called several times while he was taking the exam.

Ruan Yu glanced at the screen of his phone: “Call her back quickly. She wouldn’t call like this unless there’s something urgent.

Xu Huaisong called Xu Huaishi back. Once the call connected, he heard Huaishi’s voice which she had deliberately lowered: “Ge, mom and I have seen the news.”

Xu Huaisong frowned and was going to ask what news. He stopped himself before opening his mouth. He seemed to realize something.

Ruan Yu overheard the conversation and immediately logged on Weibo to check.

There was a news article under trending. It was about the court of Su City reopening Jiang Yi’s case. There was a video clip attached to the post. It showed Jiang Yi wailing in front of the police station and Xu Huaisong going up to comfort him.

Some passerby must have taped it and sent it over to the news reporter.

The comments below had exploded with an outpouring of sympathy.
