Those Sweet Times

Chapter 93 Part 1

Extra: Shen Zemu and Yang Yin

Shen Zemu and Yang Yin went to a coffee shop to talk. Yang Yin brought some material for Shen Zemu and briefly explained what the data analyst job entailed.

Data analyst was a profession that didn’t have a very prominent presence in the esports business. Many teams had data analysts, but the usefulness of the data analysts to the teams all depended on how the teams valued them. For some of the teams, data analysts were like ornaments. One of the main reasons for that was because many coaches and players had reservations about the decisions made based on data analysis. They rather trust their own experience and sometimes just on their instincts.

Overall, the role of the data analyst in the esports business still hadn’t matured and it needed further developing.

After listening to Yang Yin, Shen Zemu said: “You only have to tell me what result you need.”

From his point of view, the job was just calculating a bunch of data and delivering an analysis, conclusion, decision, and so on. This wasn’t Yang Yin’s area; she could only do a brief introduction and became confused herself when she started to go into details. Shen Zemu, on the other hand, had enough math knowledge and knew about the relevant software. He had a better idea than Yang Yin about how to do it.

So he told Yang Yin just to set the goals. As for how to proceed, he would figure it out himself.

Yang Yin rested her chin on one of her hands and said: “I just realized that you’re quite suitable for the job.”

“Why?’

“You’re smart, calm, cautious, factual, and rarely emotional.”

“Then, have you found out that you’re quite suitable for management.”

“Why?”

“You know how to get the right person for the right job.”

Yang Yin leaned back against the back of the chair, arms cross in front of her, and smiled comfortably as she said: “When you say it like that, it looks like I have to hire you now.”

After she returned to the club, she found the contract for the previous data analysts and made some changes before sending it out to Shen Zemu. Later that night, she also sent some assignments for him that she needed soon.

Shen Zemu wasn’t sure that all the knowledge he had now would be enough to perfectly solve all the possible problems he would encounter in the future. To be on the safe side, he went online to purchase some books he might need. After some consideration, he also sent an email to his professor in the math department to ask for some advice about what areas he should put in more effort.

-- --

Yang Yin told Deng Wenbo about hiring a part-time data analyst when Deng came to review her work.

“En.” Deng Wenbo just nodded, unusually reserved.

The boss suddenly had a change in his attitude. Yang Yin wasn’t interested in knowing why the sudden change. Instead of paying any attention to him, Yang Yin returned to her computer to watch training and competitions videos of her team. She would pause from time to time to take down notes.

“I mean.” Deng Wenbo suddenly called out to her.

Yang Yin looked up at him: “What’s wrong boss?”

“With these people.” Deng Wenbo pointed outside the door: “Can you really bring them back to the league?”

“All of them have room to grow. The most important thing for a team is coordination.”

Deng Wenbo had something else in mind. He had long wanted to play games himself. During the Spring competition, he had gone on for a few matches, but didn’t do well. But now the situation had changed, those players outside weren’t any better than him anyway and it didn’t seem too outrageous to put himself on the team? He, for sure, wouldn’t be a weight on the team……

“Tell me.” He asked Yang Yin: “Do you need more players? How about you count me in?”

Yang Yin silently looked at him.

Deng Wenbo said: “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Boss, do you know what an feeding[1] means?”

“I don’t!”

“You’ll know when you look in the mirror.”

“......” Deng Wenbo was speechless and a little annoyed. He said: “Do you know how to talk? Aren’t I your boss?”

“Boss, honest advice is unpleasant to the ear.”

Deng Wenbo couldn’t squabble with her or get into a fight with her and just left, annoyed.

[1]: The original Chinese basically said that he would cause the entire team to die, but there’s no equivalent term in English. But generally “feeding” or a “feeder” is someone who dies constantly to the enemy, giving them gold from the kill. It can also imply that the user is trying to help the enemy team on purpose.
