Those Sweet Times
Chapter 92 Part 3
Extra: Shen Zemu and Yang Yin

It was a sunny day with a scorching sun. There was no breeze at all. The sunlight made the skin feel burning hot. Yang Yin stood in the shade under a tree. She was wearing short sleeves and shorts. Her limbs were slender and her skin was fair and translucent. She wore a pair of flat sandals and the contour of her bare ankles looked exquisite.

Shen Zemu and Waiwai walked out of the classroom shoulder to shoulder. Waiwai was rattling about the test they just took but Shen Zemu wasn’t responding at all.

Yang Yin was eating an ice cream bar under the tree. She looked up and saw the two men. She smiled and waved at them, the plastic bag she was carrying dangled following the movement of her arm.

Waiwai’s eyes brightened up and ran over to say to Yang Yin: “Yang Yin, how come you’re here?”

“Want an ice cream bar?” Yang Yin handed over the plastic bag.

There were two more ice cream bars in the bag, one taro flavor and the other chocolate. Waiwai took out the taro one and was about to peel off the wrapper before Yang Yin handed him the chocolate one instead: “You eat this one.”

“Oh? Alright.”

Yang Yin took the taro one and handed it to Shen Zemu as he walked over.

Waiwai asked Yang Yin while eating the chocolate bar: “Why do you want to exchange? Any particular reason?”

“No particular reason. This one tastes better.”

“That’s right.”

Shen Zemu knew why.

As Yang Yin was talking to Waiwai, she noticed behind Shen Zemu there was a girl walking towards them.

The girl had delicate facial features and looked like she was in good spirits. When she came closer, she looked over Yang Yin from top to bottom.

Yang Yin’s instinct told her that this girl was a little hostile towards her.

The girl said to Shen Zemu: “ Shen Zemu, aren’t you going to introduce her?”

“Yang Yin, Yao Jiamu.” Shen Zemu simply said two names.

Yang Yin then nodded towards Yao Jiamu and said: “How are you.”

“How are you? What school are you from?” Yao Jiamu innocently asked; it looked like she was only casually carrying a conversation.

Waiwai however looked quite awkward; he looked like he was going to stop Yao Jiamu but couldn’t do it in time.

Yang Yin was a little uneasy and said: “I’m not in school.”

Yao Jiamu replied with an oh and drew the word out. It was a tone which didn’t sound very pleasant to the ears. Then she turned to Shen Zemu and gave him a spurious smile: “Shen Zemu, your taste, really-- --is getting worse.” Yao Jiamu turned around to walk away after saying so and as if relieved she’d finally vented her anger.

Shen Zemu suddenly blocked her way.

Yao Jiamu was surprised and looked up at him.

He looked at her face coldly and said: “Apologize.”

Yao Jiamu’s face immediately went dark: “Move away.”

“Please apologize.”

With a stern face, Yao Jiamu coldly said: “What if I don’t?”

“I’ll tell everyone that you had a rather poor upbringing.”[1]

If it was coming from any other person, this wouldn’t be counted as a threat. But he was Shen Zemu, a straight A student and campus idol who spoke few words. Many people trusted his integrity. No one would doubt anything he said. With his popularity at school, it was quite likely that by tomorrow the whole school would know that “Yao Jiamu doesn’t have a good upbringing.”

With just a few words from Shen Zemu, Yao Jiamu felt the pressure on her as if a huge mountain pressed down on her.

Yao Jiamu was very irritated, but there wasn’t anything she could do about it.

She felt so mistreated that she almost cried. She looked at Shen Zemu with teary eyes: “I’m sorry, alright?”

“Say it to her.”

Yao Jiamy turned to look at Yang Yin: “I’m sorry, sorry, sorry! Enough?”

Yang Yin backed away a step and answered: “It’s enough. It doesn’t matter.”

Yao Jiamu bitterly gave Shen Zemu a look, then ran away.

Waiwai said to Yang Yin: “I’m sorry, Yang Yin. I did mention you to her. But I didn’t mean anything bad. I didn’t know she would act this way either…...She’s probably jealous and misspoke. Don’t take it to heart.”

“Ah? It’s nothing. You better go check on her. I think she’s in a bad mood.”

“En, en. Then you two talk.” Waiwai ran to catch up with Yao Jiamu.

After both of them disappeared from sight, Yang Yin took a look at Shen Zemu and smiled: “Thanks.”

Shen Zemu cast his eyes down: “What for?”

“I never had anyone defend me like this.”

[1]: 没家教 (mei jia jiao) literally means “wasn’t raised properly” but in Chinese it’s considered a grave insult to someone and their parents/family since they failed to properly raise the child. In Chinese culture, insults to the family/parents are usually more grave. Though in this case Shen Zenmue is saying this more as threat to her social standing. This was the best we could translate to in English, but it doesn’t carry the same weight as it does in Chinese.
