You’re My Belated Happiness
Chapter 41 Part 1
Ruan Yu opened her eyes on the right side of the bed.
The sun was already up. Ruan Yu’s eyes were open but she hadn’t completely woken up. Her body felt as light as a feather. All she remembered was the kiss last night and after the kiss, Xu Huaisong’s explosive heartbeats next to her ear.
She stayed in his arms last night for a long while, chatting with him. They talked about things back in high school and Ruan Yu didn’t know when she had fallen asleep.
Ruan Yu forgot to pull both layers of the curtain up and so the early morning sunlight shone through the semi-transparent sheer curtain, creating an illusionary feel in the whole room. It took a while for Ruan Yu to come back to herself. She slowly turned her head to see the person who was at the left side of the bed.
Xu Huaisong, with his back leaning against the pillow, eyes closed, looked like he had fallen asleep. He didn’t lie down to go under the covers, but sat on top of the covers with shirt and trousers and had kept a proper distance from her.
Ruan Yu remembered that she had asked him out of curiosity how he had noticed her in the very beginning.
Xu Huaisong gave a perfunctory answer, not the kind that Ruan Yu had expected. He only told her the truth after she persistently asked the question.
It all started with a casual chat in the boy’s dormitory during their mandatory month of military education and drills back in high school. The boy in Xu Huaisong’s lower bunk bed mentioned: “The daughter of our classroom teacher is very cute. Are any of you interested in the challenge of ‘turning the teacher into your father-in-law’?”
There was no thrilling romantic encounter. It was just a playful banter among adolescent boys.
It was indeed very mundane.
Yet, it was just like any morning when the sun rises as usual, mundane but beautiful.
Ruan Yu watched Xu Huaisong for a while, then she cautiously got out of the covers. She wanted to pull Xu Huaisong down so he could lie flat in a more comfortable position. Her hands just touched his shoulder and he abruptly opened his eyes.
Startled, Ruan Yu took her hands off him: “The way you woke up is really frightening……”
Xu Huaisong smiled with sleepy eyes. He lightly lifted her chin: “What are you doing?”
“To get you to lie down to sleep. I’m getting up.”
It was time for her to get up. But for him, he didn’t feel sleepy until dawn since he had sat up on the bed for most of the night.
He said: “En. Then I’ll sleep for a while.” He lied down afterwards.
Ruan Yu got off the bed, pulled on the curtain, then went to wash up.
Xu Huaisong didn’t get to sleep for long. He was awoken by the vibrating noise of a cell phone soon after he had dozed off.
He reached over to locate the cell phone on the nightstand with closed eyes. It took him a while to get the phone. He answered the phone with half closed eyes and in a low voice: “Hello.”
It went dead silent on the other side of the phone. After the short pause, there was a voice in surprise: “Ai? Wrong number?”
Xu Huaisong abruptly opened his eyes. He quickly sat up on bed and moved the cell phone away from his ear to take a quick glance at it.
The screen showed “dad.”
But this wasn’t from his dad.
This was Ruan Yu’s cell phone.
It wasn’t that Ruan Chengru had dialed the wrong number. It was Xu Huaisong who had answered the wrong phone.
Then he heard the voice in the phone questioning: “It isn’t the wrong number……”
Xu Huaisong took a deep breath. He had made all the preparations to visit Ruan Yu’s parents during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, but was interrupted by his own father’s sudden illness. Now he was faced with the challenge of “turning the teacher to a father-in-law” at the most unexpected time.
It wasn’t a good omen to be face to face with her father so early in the morning before he hadn’t had the chance to visit her parents formally.
Xu Huaisong hesitated for a moment before deciding to face her father directly. He moved the cell phone closer and lightly cleared his throat: “Mr. Ruan, you didn’t get the wrong number. This is Huaisong. Please wait a moment.”
The other side of the phone went dead silent even longer now. After a while, there was rustling noise on the other side as if Ruan Chengru and Qu Lan were having an emergency meeting of some sort.
Xu Huaisong held the phone in hand and cautiously walked out of the bedroom as if he was holding a bomb. He opened the door to the kitchen.
