Chapter 74 Side Story 7 Part 4

The opening scene of the movie was shot by drone. It showed the sports field during the school sports meet, with a long take of the red and white runway and green grass.

At the sound of the referee’s gunshot, the male lead and several other boys dashed out from the starting line. Cheers came from the bleachers.

The male lead was well ahead of the other runners. As he was moving closer and closer to the finishing line, the camera moved to show a close-up of the female lead who had fixed her eyes on him from a corner on the bleachers.

The female lead was holding a pen and a drawing board; she was doing a sketch.

The sound from the shouting and cheering on the bleachers weakened, while the rustling sound of the female’s pencil scratching over the paper grew louder, to the point of shaking the eardrums.

The girlfriend next to the female lead asked at the top of her lungs: “What are you drawing?”

The lips of the female lead curved up slightly and she cunningly said: “Move your ear closer.”

The scene suddenly slowed to x0.2 speed and the background sound also slowly quieted down. The whole world was still listening to the female lead’s answer: “It’s– –a secret.”

The story thus started.

The after-credits scene excited the audience in the theater. Many of them began to look around to see if the the real male and female characters were among them inside the theater

Ruan Yu and Xu Huaisong didn’t expect to see the clip create such an effect. The crowd was bustling about and many young girls held their cell phones to search around as if they would dig them up from the ground.

Someone at the front began to say: “The author had posted on Weibo before the premiere. Their tickets were a couple seats!”

Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu, who had already gotten up from their seats in the last row, held their breaths.

No one inside the movie theater had left. At this point, whichever couple left the theater would be proof that they were the main characters in the movie.

Ruan Yu hid her hand with the wedding ring behind her back and pretended to be looking around as well. She said to Xu Huaisong: “Geez, couple seats? Could they be in our row?”

Xu Huaisong cleared his throat and tugged her sleeve to tell her not to give herself away.

Indeed, a girl at the row in front of them heard Ruan Yu and looked over: “Whoa, that couple looks like them!”

Xu Huaisong was just about to palm his forehead when he suddenly saw Zhao Yi grab Xu Huaishi’s hand and dashed out of the theater.

The audience’s attention shifted: “Ahhh, it could be that couple!”

Ruan Yu was dumbfounded and saw Zhao Yi turn his head to give Xu Huaisong a glance as if to say: brother, I can only help you this much!

Zhao Yi got into a third tier college, about two km from Xu Huaishi’s Hang University. He could take Xu Huaishi to her school on the way back to his.

Ruan Yu looked at Xu Huaisong.

Xu Huaisong slightly raised his chin, indicating to continue her questioning..

Ruan Yu continued: “Your dorm will be closed when he drives you back after the movie.”

“No worry, I’m on good terms with the auntie in charge of our dorm. Every time I have something good to eat, I’ll share it with her.”

Xu Huaishi was speechless. What kind of brother-sister relationship did she have with her brother that they had to test each other out like this.

Ruan Yu laughed to smooth out the atmosphere: “Hehe. Trust between people is still quite necessary.”

Her cell phone vibrated as she finished speaking. It was a message from the movie producer, Zheng Shan: [If it’s convenient, make a post on Weibo showing your wedding rings and movie tickets to foreshadow our behind the scene clip.]

Ruan Yu took the opportunity to change the subject and asked Xu Huaishi for the movie tickets. Then she turned to Xu Huaisong: “Can I borrow your left hand?”

Xu Huaisong gave her his left hand with the wedding band. 

Ruan Yu put the tickets on her lap, adjusted her cell phone to a perfect angle to catch their two hands with interlocking fingers, then clicked. She blurred the part of the picture that showed the movie theater information, then posted it on Weibo with the caption: [See you in a little while.]

Comments began immediately appearing under the post. It was full of messages like “see you in a little while” and asking Ruan Yu when she got married.

To help the movie production team, she replied to one of the comments: [You’ll find out after seeing the post-credit clip.]

The four of them made it to the viewing room two minutes before the movie started. The lights went dark right after they sat down. The pre-movie commercials were still playing.

Somehow, Xu Huaishi was a little nervous and reached over the partition to search for Ruan Yu’s hand.

Ruan Yu felt fine originally, but she also got a little tense as the movie started and tightly grabbed Xu Huaishi’s hand.

Xu Huaisong and Zhao Yi, who were sitting right next to them, asked frustratedly at the same time: “Do you two want to switch seats?”

Neither one of them answered. Their eyes were fixed on the big screen.

Xu Huaisong laughed and pulled Ruan Yu back. He kissed her earlobe and hinted: “We really don’t have enough time now, but we still have the whole night after the movie.”

Ruan Yu’s ears burned and she pushed him away with her elbow: “Who’s going to do it with you the whole night!” As she was speaking, she walked into the bathroom and closed the door.

Xu Huaisong smiled and turned to go into the other bathroom. After showering, he went to brew some honey tea to sober up and saved one cup for Ruan Yu as well. He brought the cup to Ruan Yu after she finished showering and then helped her blow dry her hair.

Ruan Yu checked Weibo posts on her cell phone as she drank. There were many posts tagging her; most of them were her readers who were posting their location and images of their movie tickets. They were saying that they were about to watch the premier and asked her whether she would be there as well.

Ruan Yu didn’t disclose whether she would be there or not but clicked like on all of them. When her hair was almost dry and she was about to put her cell phone away, she received a call from Xu Huaishi: “Sister-in-law, you are still at home? Zhao Yi and I have already picked up the tickets and we’re driving over right now.”

Xu Huaishi had purchased their tickets for them. She bought four tickets for two sets of connecting seats[1] next to each other.

Xu Huaisong couldn’t drive since he had been drinking and was planning to use the bike from a bike share to get to the theater, which wasn’t too far away. They were supposed to meet Zhao Yi and his sister there. He didn’t expect the two youngsters to be so considerate.

Ruan Yu replied: “Alright.” Then she got ready and went out with Xu Huaisong. They got into the backseat of Zhao Yi’s car. Xu Huaishi who was in the passenger seat turned her head to caution them: “Be sure to fasten your seatbelts, new driver on the road.”

Zhao Yi unhappily tsked: “I got my license almost two months ago.”

“That’s right.” Xu Huaishi humphed: “I’ve had my life in your hands for two months now. It’s like having my life hanging in the balance everyday!”

“Isn't your life hanging there quite securely?”

“That’s because I’m tough, but my sister-in-law is getting ready to get pregnant. She can’t get a single scratch at all!” She turned to take a look at Xu Huaisong after speaking and tentatively asked: “Right, Ge?”

Xu Huaisong gave her a glance: “Who gave you this mission?”

It looked like her bickering with Zhao Yi had been scripted beforehand in order to find out when her brother and Ruan Yu were going to have kids.

Xu Huaishi couldn’t continue and turned to look at Zhao Yi: “See, I told you that my brother would see through it.”

Ruan Yu laughed: “You can just ask. You don’t need to go about circles like this.”

“Grandma told me to pry about it. But you two don’t have to feel any pressure, just like my mom said– – ‘it’ll depend on their own decision.’”

Xu Huaisong and Ruan Yu looked at each other and said: “We’ll let nature take its course.” That meant they weren’t going to avoid it.

Xu Huaishi giggled: “Then it should happen rather quickly.”

Xu Huaisong, Ruan Yu: “......”

They were wondering whether their little sister seemed to know too much? Why would she sound like an old hand in this matter?

Zhao Yi lightly coughed, trying to dissipate the doubt he could sense coming from the backseat. But it didn’t seem to work and he coughed again.

This time, it was Ruan Yu’s turn to pry: “After the movie, what are you two going to do?”

Xu Huaishi turned her head: “Hrm? We’re certainly going to go back to our schools.”

[1]: In China, there’s movie theaters with seating for couples where you buy the two seats with the middle armrest missing as a unit.
